Clan Tartan
The red and green tartan is believed to have originated from Robert Macfie of Langhouse and Robert Andrew Macfie of Dreg horn. The clan tartan shown here was recorded in the books of the Court of the Lord Lyon as the official Macfie Clan Tartan on 29th August 1991.
Clan Badge
The armoral bearings of the clan depicted on the clan strap and buckle badge at left, shows a demi-lion rampant with the motto PRO REGE, meaning 'for the king'. It originated from Macfie of Dreghorn.
The Plant Badge is Scots Pine, Oak, or Crowberry.
Clan Macfie Today
(Update by Sandy McPhie, Clan Commander 1989-2008)
The Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland was commenced in 1672, forty-nine years after our last Chief was murdered. As a consequence, no Arms of a Macfie Chief have never been recorded. In 1864 the first Grants of Arms recorded in the Public Register for Clan members were made for Macfie of Langhouse and Macfie of Dreghorn. The latter's Arms and strap and buckle badge are commonly shown today as being those of Clan Macfie. As these Arms were, until comparatively recently, the only ones recorded for our Clan, the Lyon Court came to use the spelling "Macfie" as being that of the Clan's official name. The "MacPhee" spelling is also in common use at times as a Clan name, while "MacDuffie" appears frequently in historical documents and at time, has been interchangeable with the "MacPhee/Macfie" spellings. Chief Malcolm's family name was recorded as "McPhie" in the court records of the trial of Colkitto Macdonald for his murder in 1623.
In the late 1970s Dr. Earle Douglas MacPhee of Vancouver, BC Canada, rallied Clan members around the world to support a movement he initiated to have Clan Macfie recognised once again as being an active Clan with, hopefully, a new Chief appointed. He researched and wrote an authoritative History of our Clan and was instrumental in the formation of Clan Societies in several countries around the world. He encouraged a number of Clan members to petition for Grants of Arms.
Dr. MacPhee's efforts were highly successful with Clan Macfie being formally recognised by the Lord Lyon as an "active" clan on 27th May 1981. Dr MacPhee was appointed the Clan's first Ceann-Cath or Clan Commander on 6th November 1981. Regrettably, he died on 25th September the following year. Our second Clan Commander, A C. (Sandy) McPhie of Toowoomba Qld. Australia was appointed on 7th September 1989. The red and green Clan Macfie tartan was formally recorded in the Lyon Court's register of Clan Tartans on 29th August 1991. The current Clan Commander is Iain Morris McFie Esq. of Coulintyre, Kincraig, Kingussie, Scotland.
Today, Clan Macfie has active Clan Societies in Scotland, Ireland, Canada, U.S.A (5), Sweden, New Zealand, and Australia. International Gatherings of Clan Macfie are held in Scotland every four years. The next is scheduled for September 2023.
